ICID 2024 Travel Fund

ISID will host the 20th International Congress on Infectious Diseases in Cape Town, South Africa, this December 3-6! 

The 20th ICID 2024 in Cape Town brings together over 2,500 infectious disease experts from more than 100 countries. The ISID and our many stakeholder partners are working together to create a unique event focused on clinical knowledge and practice, novel translational science, infection prevention protocols, and the epidemic intelligence of infectious disease. ICID is where world-renowned experts share innovative ideas every two years, and colleagues spark critical connections. It is a place for our global industry and medical community to share groundbreaking solutions for prevention, management, and cutting-edge treatments for all those impacted by infectious diseases.

The conference has traditionally had a particular focus on young researchers from LMICs. We’d love for as many of our colleagues and early career researchers to join us in person in South Africa to benefit from the mentoring opportunities, moderated sessions, workshops, and community events. This year, we have limited grant-funded opportunities to travel delegates to South Africa, and many infectious disease early career researchers and clinicians are asking for support to attend. So, we are asking for a pledge from you – to reach out to your networks, institutions, industry partners, or philanthropic organizations to ASK that they donate, gift, or grant funds to ISID to contribute to a special fund to support travelers from LMICs to the December conference. The ISID is a registered charity in 50 US states, so if your contacts or institutions have a US office, this might help them contribute more readily. ProMED Moderator Dr Ghassan Matar is Elected Co-Chair of US CDC PulseNet Middle East Network

Dr. Ghassan Matar, a distinguished professor and ProMED-MENA & ProMED-AMR, has been elected as the CDC PulseNet Middle East Co-Chair. The organization focuses on the early detection and prevention of foodborne and waterborne diseases. Dr. Matar’s role entails overseeing regional laboratories, facilitating timely responses to foodborne events, and promoting international collaboration. His extensive involvement with global health organizations further underscores his leadership in the field. With Dr. Matar’s guidance, the CDC PulseNet Middle East is poised to continue its important work in safeguarding public health through enhanced genomic surveillance and regional cooperation. Call for Hot Topics in Infectious Diseases (ID) Abstracts

We welcome you to submit an abstract for a poster or oral presentation on a “Hot Topic” at the ICID 2024. This session is meant to highlight ID research that may have made important findings after the general Abstracts submission, including the Late Breaking Abstracts closed. Consider submitting if your research or new data represents an emerging, hot topic issue, especially in the African region. This category will focus on capturing abstracts with ground-breaking and unique data that have not been presented before in any Congresses. We are especially interested in new clinical trial results relevant to low and middle-income countries and outbreaks in these regions.

NOTE:

  • The Emerging ID Hot Topic Abstract deadline is not intended as an extension of the general submission date which has passed.
  • Accepted individual poster presentations or oral presentations will be presented at special sessions at the meeting.
  • ID Hot Topic abstracts will be reviewed/evaluated by the ICID 2024 Committee.
  • ID Hot Topic abstracts should not be abstracts rejected in the recently concluded Abstracts and Late-Breaking Abstracts processes.

Participate in ICID’s Ubuntu Community Village

Ubuntu is a recognition of our interconnectedness, a call to community, solidarity, and humanity for all.

The ICID Ubuntu Community Village (UCV) will be a lively, interesting space that will bring together youth, community members, midwives and other health professionals, Civil Society Organizations, and others working on and impacted by AMR, HIV, TB, or other infectious diseases within a One Health context to interact, learn, share, make new connections, strengthen existing networks and celebrate successes. The UCV will also act as a bridge between the more technical scientific sessions at the ICID 2024 and the community action, by sharing the issues in a manner that is more lucid, relevant, and easily translatable/applicable at the grassroots.

There will be a mix of live performances, documentaries/films, music, art, dance, skills building and best practice sharing workshops, speaker sessions/presentations, debates, and other exciting cultural activities, all based on feedback and applications from the diversity of community-connected individuals, groups, and organizations. Key proceedings from the UCV will also be captured and shared on various ISID platforms.

Late-Breaking Abstract Submission Now Open

Submit your late-breaking abstract to ICID 2024 now until June 1st! The authors of selected abstracts will have the opportunity to share and discuss findings with colleagues, gain feedback from expert faculty, collaborate with other professionals in the field, and expand their professional portfolio. The highest-scoring abstracts will be published in a supplement of the International Journal of Infectious Diseases (IJID).

ICID 2024 showcases the latest advances and discoveries in infectious diseases, patient care, and global public health. This year’s event will be held in person in Cape Town, South Africa.

On behalf of the ISID Executive Committee, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 20th International Congress on Infectious Diseases (ICID) hosted in the beautiful city of Cape Town, South Africa. The Programme will be 3 full days in length, and we hope that this Congress will be the most important global infectious diseases meeting of the year, something you will not want to miss out on. The outstanding Programme built by regional and international experts, focuses on the burden of infection in low- and middle- income countries which as we all know affect everyone ultimately.

Infectious diseases are all around us, just as they have been for centuries. The recent COVID-19 pandemic highlights the importance of the need for continued research, innovation, and funding in the field of infectious diseases. Each year, millions of people contract influenza while thousands more die from complications. HIV continues to spread amongst some patient populations, often resulting in co-infections of tuberculosis and pneumonia. News media outlets highlight devastating outbreaks of infectious diseases on a regular basis including Ebola Virus Disease, Zika Virus, avian influenza, and even Mpox, gripping public attention and sparking fear. Good science from all over the world is the key to understanding these diseases and planning effective public health responses.

The 20th ICID will offer a diverse, relevant, and cutting-edge Scientific Programme, numerous educational opportunities for students and researchers against the backdrop of a stunning city on the coast of Africa. Often described as the Mother City of South Africa, Cape Town is regarded as one of the most beautiful places in the world. It is a rare cultural gem, with a rainbow population of locals and people from all over the world creating a rich cultural feast with plenty of opportunities to savor a unique way of life. The pristine surrounding areas also offer unparalleled nature experiences.

ISID Opens its Call for Nominations to its International Council for the term 2024-2030

The ISID Council reflects the broad range of disciplines and interests represented in the field of infectious diseases. Council members are expected to participate in ISID activities through sub-committees and actively promote the Society and its programs through their regional and local contacts. Candidates from all backgrounds and regions of the world are welcome.

Please submit a short statement of interest, a letter of recommendation, and a CV by following the steps below:

  1. Click on “Login” on the dark blue bar below
  2. Create a new user account by clicking on the “New User” link below the email field
  3. Fill out your profile, and click “Save.” You will be automatically returned to the Homepage
  4. Now click on “Submission” on the dark blue bar
  5. Click “Add New” to create your submission

Apply to the ISID Emerging Leaders Program 2024

The ISID Emerging Leaders Program was developed in 2016 to recognize excellence in the field of infectious diseases at an early career level, to facilitate capacity building and succession planning and to give select, promising early career investigators and physicians the opportunity to become familiar with the Society’s work, engage in ISID’s activities, showcase their work and network with colleagues around the world. Emerging Leaders will serve a four-year term.

Eligibility:

  • Early career investigators, clinicians from all professional backgrounds, veterinarians, pharmacists, epidemiologists, public health professionals, environmental scientists, or similar
  • Individuals at full or associate professor level and chairs of departments are not eligible
  • In training or recently completed training in the areas of infectious diseases (human or veterinary), microbiology, epidemiology, genomics, public health, or other specialty that deals with the prevention, management, or treatment of infectious diseases
  • Past performance indicative of a promising career in infectious diseases;
  • Low and Lower Middle-Income countries (LMIC) nationals living and working within an LMIC
  • Ability to speak and write in English
  • Finalist candidates must be available for a virtual interview

Application Requirements:

  • Two letters of recommendation explaining what makes you stand out amongst your peers, including at least one from a current or former supervisor
  • Motivational statement of no more than 500 words
  • Provide a summary of what you wish to achieve as an ISID Emerging Leader, given your 4-year tenure and your area of focus. With this, please also propose one new initiative for the Emerging Leader cohort you join
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Ability to commit 4 years to ISID and participate in:
    • Bi-monthly calls, as well as additional topic specific calls
    • Knowledge Exchange webinars
    • Social Media engagement
    • Contribute to journal and blog postings, etc.
    • Contribute to fundraising efforts as needed
    • Support Congresses and ISID Meetings to raise visibility of the Society as the world leader in global infectious disease education, surveillance, and advocacy
    • Support other ISID related opportunities as they arise
