Cholera outbreak kills 17 in Borno
----------------------------------
No fewer than 9 people were reported dead while several others were
hospitalised in Madube Village of Gwoza Local Government Area of
Borno state, as a result of an outbreak of cholera, a disease which
has symptoms of severe diarrhoea and vomiting. Meanwhile, in Biu LGA,
8 people were confirmed dead and the wards of Biu General Hospital
were filled up with people affected by the disease last week [21-25
Sep 2009], receiving treatment.
The disease was said to have started from neighbouring Madagali
council in Adamawa State before it spread to Gwoza. Both share a
common boundary. The outbreak was confirmed to Vanguard yesterday [30
Sep 2009]. In Gwoza, the Chairman of the local government, Alhaji
Musa Abbas Chiroma, said 24 people contracted the disease and 4 died
while the remaining 20 are still receiving treatment in various
health clinics in the affected areas.
He said the council has taken drugs to the affected villages, while a
team of medical experts/personnel were deployed permanently to the
affected villages so as to ensure that the infection does not spread
to other areas.
He added that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has visited the
area and took specimens from the village to the University of
Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) for testing purposes. The WHO
admonished the people of the council area to always keep their
surroundings clean, and to wash their hands and food substances
before consumption.
When our correspondent visited the General Hospital, Gwoza where some
of the affected people were admitted, it was gathered that there were
no drugs in the hospital as the relations of the sick people were
busy purchasing drugs in nearby drug stores.
